Novice and casual to experienced shooters can benefit from this series of carbine drills designed to keep you on the top of your shooting game with a 140 round course of fire intended to increase your speed and accuracy from seven to 25 yards.

Rating: 10.0/10 (2 votes cast)

This series of carbine drills is designed to give the shooter a plan to follow which will ensure the shooter can maintain a basic level of proficiency with the any carbine. The round count for these drills is based on 5 x 28 round magazines (140 rounds) and will assist the shooter with budgeting both ammunition cost and time, in addition to addressing equipment and consistency concerns. This series of drills will aid the casual shooter or the shooter “on a budget” with his carbine proficiency. Primary weapon to secondary weapon transitions are also included in the drill series.

First things first, always review the Cardinal Rules of Firearm Safety before loading your weapon, now move on to other range safety controls, proper loading and unloading procedures and finally do a review basic marksmanship skills. Determine how fast you should perform these drills. A good rule of thumb is to base your speed on your accuracy. If you are missing the black you probably need to slow down to work on your accuracy and your fundamentals, but if you are driving every round in the center of target, then you need to speed it up.

3” DOTS or B3 at 7 YARDS [Get our custom 3 inch dot target]

Start at the right forward corner, left rear diagonal, forward, right lateral, rear to a forward left diagonal.

Additional tips:

If unable to move at the range, do the static drills both strong and weak side or double up on strong side drills. Practice movement and manipulation at home dry.

While doing the 7 yard and turn drills, load multiples of 8 rounds if you wish to do more transitions.

Remember to utilize the workspace when performing all reloads and immediate action drills.

Remember at less than 25 yards/meters transition to secondary weapon to stay in the fight. At distances greater than 25 yards/meters seek cover and perform immediate action to clear carbine stoppage.

Iron, PRI flip-ups, scopes, red-dots, reflexive… you have them all and so do we, but how do you keep them straight? You zero a sight and then put it in your kit bag, six months later you pull it out to teach a class or hunt for bad guys and you have to re-zero your sight because you could not remember … was my EOTech on T10 or T18? What about the ACOG T1 or T2? I might not make a difference at 25 meters, but when we get to 300 or 400 meters, it certainly will make a difference.

The instructors at Aggressive Defensive Solutions use a variety of different optics and many of these are only used for specific classes. In order to keep all these straight and not blow the zero every time we switch sight systems the instructors mark the underside of the sight or optic with the rail slot number it was zeroed on. For example, my EOTech is zeroed with the locking bar installed on T18 and my ACOG locks on slot T2. The bottom of these sights are marked with a white paint pen, or labeler tape listing T18 and T2, respectively, that way all I have to do is look at the bottom of the sight, align it with the correct rail slot and then I can fire three rounds to confirm my zero instead of having to re-zero my sights. Saves time, saves money! Your thoughts? Comments?

In November 2008 AggDefSol performed an Advanced Carbine Operators Course for the Virginia Beach Police Department hosted at their Blackwater facility. The course was identical to the course AggDefSol ran in June for the VBPD, including classroom training, stress shooting, accuracy at distance, and culminating with team level live fire in the shoot house.

The highpoint of the week was the surprise visit of Ric’s old friend Todd Jarrett who spent about an hour on the range with the class providing tips and tricks, and answering questions. Todd also gave the students an impromptu class on an improved grip for use with a barricade he is now teaching his students to help the shooters stability. Todd’s technique allows the shooter to have a very stable grip using only his support hand. We can accomplish this by creating an almost vise like grip between the weapon and the barricade. At AggDefSol we teach student to use barricades as cover and to keep off their cover, but we recognize Todd’s new weapon hold provides the shooter the ability to take the long shot with much greater accuracy. Thank you Todd.

In mid-June 2008 the Virginia Beach Police Department Faternal Order of Police Lodge #8 (VBPD/FOP8) Shooting Team hosted the Aggressive Defensive Solutions team at their range facilities to conduct an Advanced Carbine Operators Course for members of their team and the department. The four day course included several customized classroom segments as well as multiple hours on the range. Stress shooting, accuracy at distance, day and night qualification courses, written tests and several live fire iterations in the kill house made up the body of the week. Everyone did well and spirits were high at the end of each long and tiring day. Brian James of the VBPD SWAT Team was the overall high shooter and was awarded the ”Black Shirt” for the class. I was impressed with the hard work and attention to detail that was displayed by the students. The class was a real pleasure to teach. I was provided excellent assistance by my Adjunct Instructors Ron Ehlers and Shawn Johnson. Thanks boys!!
