This review has been a long time coming!

A little background

Armored Mobility Inc, based in California, is privately owned by and really got into the armor business by chance. The business really seems to have sprung from a one off custom job and then they challenged for even make armor with even greater stopping power, thus AMI was born. We are glad it was, this armor exceed our expectations in every way.

Aggressive Defensive Solutions hosted the shoot with C2 Shooting Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The shoot was very well attended by local law enforcement from throughout Southeastern Virginia and North Carolina; also, we want to thank the guys from the FBI for making the special trip to see us.

Evolution of the Shoot

Ryan O’Neal, Director of Business Development at AMI, opened the shoot with a five minute sales pitch and background on the company, products, and their vision for going forward. What really impressed us about AMI is even as a small company they are not resting on current technology, but rather looking at revolutionary changes in their armor formulation.

Shots and Methodology

All of the actual shots were performed by Ric, AggDefSol. First, I want to say the goal of the shoot was to get the plates to fail, so with that said we were going to penetration even if we had to get out the drill press! We were amazed the first penetration (SAPI3) was achieved with the 7.62 x 51mm after 13 rounds! Try that with your ceramic plate.

Ric’s goal was to stagger the rounds across the plate to maximize the plate’s ability to stop multiple strikes with all the rounds fired from between the 7 and 10 yard line. We fired 23 long gun rounds at the TAC3s, including m855 Green Tip, without a single penetration! Switching to handguns we fired over 50 rounds of various calibre without penetration. Watch the end of the video to see how we tried to defeat the AMI TAC3S.

The total long gun on the SAPI3 was 16 with a single penetration as noted above. We subsequently fired 47 more handgun rounds without any additional penetration. Now determined to cause the poor SAPI3 with over 60 rounds to fail, we subjected it to another 7.62 x 51mm round which did penetrate and the final blow was two 300 win mag rounds which easily penetrated from 50 yards, as expected.

Conclusion?

The conclusion is pretty short and to the point. I don’t want to get into a gunfight, but if I do, I want to be wearing AMI armor. We fired over 150 rounds into two plates and single failure in each with a pretty beefy round that you are not likely to encounter on the street. The last three penetrations were our extra shots, and really if your plate had taken 60 strikes already, you are having a really, really bad day.

All maintenance and weapons handling tasks start with a proper weapon clearing procedure. Running our courses we have seen our share of unsafe, crazy unloading procedures, if they are done at all!

First things First!

Remember the Cardinal Rules of Firearms Safety:

Treat every weapon as if it is loaded.

Keep you finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

Never allow your muzzle to cover anything you are not willing to accept the responsibility for destroying.

Be aware of your target and what is around it.

Now that we have the basic safety rules in place we can get to the actual clearing of the weapon.

Be mindful of the workspace. Loading and unloading procedures occur in the workspace where we have better tactical and visual control of the weapon.

You will also notice that at no point do we clear by “firing”, that is Rule 2 - Keep your finger off the trigger until you make are ready to fire. There is never the need to press the trigger during a clearing procedure.

Carbine clearing steps

With the weapon in the workspace rotate it clockwise 90 degrees to visually inspect the safety and make sure it is in the SAFE position. If the weapon is on released hammer, the weapon fired and not cycled, then on an AR style rifle the safety will not move to the SAFE position. If this is the case go ahead to the next step and continue to be mindful the weapon condition.

Depress the magazine release and allow the magazine to fall free of the weapon. If you have a full or partial magazine you want to maintain control of the magazine as you would during a tactical reload.

Maintaining the workspace rotate the weapon counterclockwise until you can clearly see the ejection port. Do not over rotate the weapon so you are staring directly at the ejection port or any brass, live or spent, may eject into your face.

While observing the ejection port, use your support hand pull the charging handle fully to the rear and hold.

At this point you should look at three spots for a live round or spent brass while looking through the ejection port:

observe the magazine well and make sure there is no brass or live ammunition;

observe the bolt and make sure there is no brass or live ammunition attached;

observe the chamber and make sure there is no brass or live ammunition.

If you are training, have your training partner verify step 5 and verbally agree by saying “clear.”

Release the charging handle.

Finally, rotate your weapon to visually inspect the safety and make sure it is in SAFE position

If you followed these steps your weapon is now safe, but remember we ALWAYS follow the Cardinal Rules of Firearm Safety, so even after clearing your weapon continue to follow all Cardinal Rules of Firearms Safety. The life you save may be someone you care about.

Happy (and safe) shooting!

AggDefSol: Yea, you an about 100 other guys…
AMI: We’d like you shoot our plates.
AggDefSol: OK, shoot ‘em with what?
AMI: What do you want to shoot it with?
AggDefSol: Everything. [9mm, 40, 45, .223/5.56, 7.62 x 39, and 7.62 x 51]
AMI: Ok!
AggDefSol: You know we are going to shoot your plate more than once.
AMI: Yea, we expect that. We were hoping you’d shoot two different plates. Our light weight SAPI-3 [3lb - not rated for m855] and the TAC3S.
AggDefSol: Ugghh, you know that’s going to be over 50 rounds in each plate?
AMI: Yes, it that a problem for you? And can you hit it with a sledge-hammer too?
AggDefSol: …not for us. Its your reputation. [yea, these AMI boys must be off their rocker...]
AMI: Great we’ll see you on the 15th…

Really, Armored Mobility allowed us to shoot over 50 rounds in their SAPI-3 and TAC3S plates today. Stay tuned for the results and watch the video.

can you guess what happened? …realistically, how would your body armor stand up to that beating?
